Color Guard – Sofiia Kuzmenko
Competition season is officially over for the color guard. At the beginning of May, they traveled to Wildwood, New Jersey for a final performance. They earned a score of 83.22 at prelims and 81.02 in finals. Now all that’s left this year is to march the Memorial Day parade with the band and prepare for next year.
Crew (Boys) – Dan Kaper-Barcelata
RBCC has had an eventful medal season, with two big regattas in the past two weeks and one to come this weekend. At City Championships, our lightweight four, coxed by Ellie Meltzer, took home gold after dominating all other teams both in the time trial and final. Our Varsity 4 got silver after ranking third in the time trial, beating out Father Judge for their coveted spot. The Novice 4, stroked by Danny Kim, got fourth in the final by just over a second from third. After this great performance, the team took to Mercer Lake to race at the Mid Atlantic Youth Championships. The lightweight four raced in the 2V4 event against top clubs in the country, such as PNRA Mercer, Row New Jersey, and the infamous St. Joseph’s Prep. This did not phase them, and they ended up getting silver, beating two Prep, PNRA, and Row New Jersey boats to get there. Our varsity pair, stroked by valedictorian Theodore He, won bronze in their event, showcasing some of the incredible student athleticism on this team. This weekend, the team will race at the Stotesbury Cup, which will help us determine who we select to race at SRAA nationals of those who have qualified. Many of our seniors will be racing on the day of prom, so there’s some extra motivation to be fast!
Crew (Girls) – Arielle Mims
Radnor Girls Crew has been working hard with only a few days left in the season for some, and a little over a week for others. After a great performance on the first day of the City Championship Regatta on May 4th, many boats qualified to race in their heats the next day. Day one witnessed two Varsity 4 races, placing 4th and 17th in their heat. The 4 that placed 4th advanced to semi-finals the next day, where they placed 2nd and raced in the finals later that day—placing 4th. Two JV 8s raced and placed 4th and 9th in their heat. The boat that placed 4th advanced to finals and won 3rd overall, with stroke Maisie Wetzel leading the boat to victory. A Freshmen 8 and a Freshmen 4 raced, with the 8 placing 4th and advancing to finals to place 5th, and the 4 placing 6th overall. The second day was rainy, which made for unideal rowing conditions, but the team continued to persevere. After two weeks of hard practices to do some fine tuning on technique, as well as pieces to simulate races, RGCC is ready to race in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta—the biggest high school regatta in the world on Friday and Saturday in Philadelphia. With this being the last race for some, you can expect boats to do the best they have yet. Following Stotesbury is the SRAA Nationals, where RGCC will be racing a Freshman 8, JV 8 and Varsity 4. Radnor Girls Crew is ready to showcase all they have learned this season and put out some amazing times later this week!
Lacrosse (Boys) – Margarita Moreland
The Radnor Boys Lacrosse team is moving through their season with continuous determination. On Saturday, May 4th, the boys traveled to La Salle for one of their biggest games of the season. Despite valiant efforts, the team came up short (9-10). That following Tuesday, Radnor played against Conestoga on Teamer Field at 7:00pm and secured a 13-3 victory. Seniors Kessy Cox and Nate Lucchesi contributed with three goals, respectively, and Jude Azzarano scored one for the Raptors. The boys hosted the Academy of the New Church on Friday, May 10th, and certainly did not disappoint. Senior Owen Knight secured four goals, while Tommy Goldstein had three, and Tucker Graham added two for RALA. Ultimately, the game ended in a 13-7 victory. We wish the team the best of luck as they gear up for Districts.
Lacrosse (Girls) – Tatum Brown
Radnor Girls Lacrosse finished off a strong regular season, going 11-0 in the Central League. To cement their incredible season so far, they beat Conestoga at home on Tuesday May 7th to secure the Central League Championship. This was a significant victory for Radnor, as the Pioneers have proven to be a main rival. Sophomore defender Anna Reger stepped up in the game and guarded one of Conestoga’s best players, Chloe Brown. In the same vein, senior goalie Arden Jansen came up with some clutch saves and, as always, was a force to be reckoned with in the net. Grayson Buono, a senior attacker committed to the University of Delaware, and junior attacker and Duke-bound Taylor Murphy both worked tremendously hard on the draw circle, controlling a majority of the draws. They both assisted Radnor’s offense by moving the ball and scoring goals. Seniors Sarah Kelley and Kate Gallagher were crucial to Radnor’s communication and scoring. As we have seen throughout the season, Kate is aggressive and is always working hard on and off the ball. Grace Gordon was all speed in the game, able to cause turnovers and run the ball up the field, leaving other players in her wake. The atmosphere at the game was electrifying and truly an exceptional performance from both sides. The score was 7-6, with both teams fighting hard till the end. Looking forward, the girls have a bye for the first round, but will play on Thursday, May 16th at 4:30pm. This will be a home game and a double header with the boys. Make sure to purchase your tickets beforehand and come support RGLAX!
Softball – Audrey Rubenstein
Radnor Softball took on the Central League teams for the second time of the season and gave each team a run for their money. They took on Penncrest on May 1st at home with Annie Talon, Erin Tobias, and Ashley Van Trieste all collecting two hits for the Raptors. The following day, the girls played Strath Haven and were tied through the 7th, with three doubles from Erin Tobias, Annie Talone, and Audrey Rubenstein. RSB’s bats were hot in the 6th and 7th inning scoring 6 runs. Audrey Rubenstein took the mound to shut out Strath Haven with six strikeouts over three innings. On Monday, May 8th, the girls played Marple and the bats were not as hot but they came out in their game against Harriton. Audrey Rubenstein hit a first pitch home run to start off the game, and Ashley Van Trieste and Abby Rasmussen collected a hit each. RSB took the field for the last time on Monday, May 13th to play Springfield. They said goodbye to their eight seniors, five who played all four years and three players who came out to play for the first time their senior year. Radnor Softball will miss their seniors dearly and look forward to an exciting season next year!
Tennis (Boys) – Ben Brecher
Radnor Boys Tennis continued their preparation for Districts by holding multiple practices for the players competing in the tournament. In the first round of Districts, the boys were matched up against Strath Haven, and ultimately came out victorious (3-0); the match ended early because Radnor won three out of five matches. After the confident win against Strath Haven, the team traveled to Unionville for a tough road match. The games were close, but they unfortunately fell by a score of 2-3. Following the match against Unionville, the boys faced Garnet Valley on Monday, May 6th, in the tournament’s back draw. Once again, the opposition was solid, and after a long and hard match, Radnor defeated Garnet Valley by a narrow 3-2 win. The next day, while JV had a scrimmage against Episcopal, the varsity Districts team traveled to Central Bucks East High School for their next game in the tournament. This game had huge implications, as the winner would move on to States. Radnor Boys Tennis pushed their hardest but unfortunately fell 0-3 to Central Bucks East. As mentioned in the last roundup, Antonio Fidelibus and Graham Bernabeo were competing in the Central Athletic League Doubles Tournament. After crushing teams along the way, Antonio and Graham pushed all the way to States and will now be competing in Hershey during the week of May 25th. Once again, Radnor Boys Tennis wishes them the best of luck!
Track and Field (Boys) – Commerce Fisk
At last, the postseason is here. After an incredible two months, a group of eager and talented runners and field athletes remain to take on the District 1 Championships. The past two weeks have been filled with competitions in the highest level of events and fantastic results. On May 1st, many members of the team traveled to the brand-new Rap Curry Sports Complex in Drexel Hill to participate in the Delco Championship trials and finals. In the relentless heat, the JV 4x800m team secured second place, with a time of 8:57.76. Senior Lionel Dunbar and junior Luca Jones both qualified in the 100m with times of 11.37 and 11.47 respectively. Dunbar’s 22.79 time also qualified in the 200m. Junior Owen Lim continued to impress, with a qualifying time of 16.80 in the 110m hurdles, as well as jumping 40-2 in the triple jump. A time of 9:32.54 in the 3200m earned senior Luke Bodden 5th place in the meet and senior Noah Wampole asserted his dominance at the high jump and finished at 6”4 for second place. On Saturday, May 4th, the highly-anticipated Delco Championship Finals awaited the team at Upper Darby High School. Radnor’s varsity 4×8 team, consisting of Alex Karnavas, Luke Bodden, Commerce Fisk, and Joseph Garzio, immediately rose to the occasion, earning first place (8:07.18) and a spot in the District Championships. Lionel Dunbar came in 6th place at the meet with a time of 11.33, earning three points for Radnor, and Luca Jones finished 8th place with a time of 11.52, earning one point. Radnor’s 4x100m team executed a time of 43.45 and came in 4th at the meet, scoring five points for the team. After completing a time of 16.62 in the 110m hurdles, Owen Lim cracked the top eight. Lastly, Joseph Garzio capped off an unreal meet with his second 1:55 of the day in the 800m, earning him 5th and four points for Radnor. On Tuesday of that next week, the final JV meet of the year took place at Upper Darby. Freshman Aiden Haas demonstrated his bright future with the team, running 2:09.61 in the 800m, while Junior Domenic Roselli earned third place at the meet, throwing 102-5 in the javelin. A day later, Lower Merion hosted the Central League Championships and Lionel Dunbar ran a fast 11.17 second 100m. Junior Erik Mortensen continued his excellence in the 400m, running 53.21. Luke Bodden came second in the meet, with a time of 4:18.71 in the 1600m, a new personal record for him. Over at the field events, junior Brandon Ngyuen earned a well-deserved second place in the pole vault, surpassing 11-6, while Noah Wampole wowed viewers at high jump, earning first place with a jump of 6”6. The highlight of the day for Radnor Boys Track and Field was Junior Joseph Garzio’s 800m run, where his time of 1:54.16 officially surpassed Peter Cooke’s 2017 800m record of 1:54.30, granting Garzio the Radnor High School record and first place at the meet. Though the boys have begun tapering at practice, all spectators can attest to the fact that this team is certainly not slowing down. With the District Championships quickly approaching on May 17th and 18th, the athletes continuously prepare themselves for the biggest stages in high school track.
Track and Field (Girls) – Kayla Cormier
Radnor Girls Track & Field has continued their hard work and domination throughout the past few weeks. On Thursday, May 2, RGTF traveled to Upper Darby to run in the Delco Championship Trials, during which Courtney Kearns, Kayla Cormier, and Keira Mucksavage qualified for the 800 meter. Courtney also qualified for districts, with a time of 2:21.62. A few days later, RGTF returned to Upper Darby on May 4 to compete in the Delco Championships. Despite the rainy weather and chilly temperature, Courtney ran a personal record and Kayla qualified for districts. Zoe Margolies, Katelyn Anderson, and Emma Hyde competed in the 3200 meter, during which Zoe won (11:04.66). On May 8, RGTF headed to historic rival school Lower Merion for their final official meet of the season: Central League Championships. The 4×800 relay (Kayla Cormier, Keira Mucksavage, Katelyn Anderson, and Courtney Kearns) took gold, and Emma Hyde placed seventh overall in the 1600 meter. Although the regular season ended with Lower Merion’s CAL Championship, Radnor isn’t planning to press the brakes quite yet. The girls look forward to a competitive postseason that begins this weekend. Friday and Saturday will mark the District Championships, held at Coatesville. Radnor’s 4×800 meter relay will run on Friday. The following day, Kayla Cormier and Courtney Kearns will take to the open 800 meter, Zoe Margolies will compete in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter, Katelyn Anderson will also run the 3200 meter, and Sophia Hill will be pole vaulting. RGTF is always eager for more, so tune in this weekend to cheer the talented athletes on!
Ultimate Frisbee (Boys) – Kavin Thapar
Radnor Boys Ultimate had a busy two weeks, with several practices and scrimmages preparing for cities. Cities occurred on Saturday, May 11th and Sunday, May 12th, where Radnor did not disappoint and performed extremely well. On Saturday, the boys played Science Leadership Academy and sadly lost 12-7. Radnor then played Wissahickon, a team ranked eighth in the country, and lost 13-4; however, the Raptors came back and had a strong win against Salesianum (13-3). Riding the energy of their last victory, the team won their last game against Friends Central in a sweeping 13-0 shutout. On Sunday, Radnor was back and ready to win against Springfield in a 7-6 universe point game. Then, the boys beat Harriton in another extremely close game, at 9-8. For their final game, Radnor beat Haverford 8-5—winning five games and losing two. They ended up placing 6th in the tournament and are extremely excited to head to States.
Ultimate Frisbee (Girls) – Sofie Jubelirer
The girls had a busy weekend at Cities in Lower Perkimon Valley last week. This began the official journey to Nationals and set the bracket for states, which will be the weekend of May 25th in Allentown. On Saturday, RGUF came out strong with a lineup of 14, the most they’ve had for a tournament this season. Radnor had the chance to play four teams on day one: Abington Friends, Wissahickon, SLA, and HUDA. The day started off with cold and windy weather, but turned into a beautiful and sunny day. The girls swept Abington Friends easily, scoring well over ten points in the match. They then carried this energy into their game against Wissahickon, which was a well-fought game in which the girls came out victorious. The last two games were slightly more difficult, but RGUF was able to power through and defeat both teams, accomplishing a 4-0 record for the day. Day two at Cities, however, did not go as well as the girls originally hoped. In a long and strenuous game for both teams, Radnor lost by one point due to hard cap, or the time cap, against Springfield, ultimately putting the team out of the Cities Finals. In the game for 3rd place, RGUF also lost against Wissahickon by one point, again due to hard cap. Although Sunday was a struggle for everyone, the team is focused on prioritizing practices and team bonding to get their heads back in the game for states, where hopefully they will succeed even more!
