Over the past two weeks, snowy weather and frigid temperatures have brought an arctic chill that filled the halls of Radnor High School (literally: my parka never came off). Now, students and teachers alike are tuckered out in attempts to recover from an arduous stint of midterm exams. The grind never stopped for the athletes and writers of the Roundup, though – read more to catch up on the recent performances in the realm of winter athletics.Â

Basketball (Boys) – Ellis Margolies
The regular season is coming to an end for the Raptors. Radnor, led by a lot of seniors, is looking to make a statement in the playoffs. Recently, Radnor lost a close (48-46) game to Haverford over a questionable foul call which put the Fords up two with only a few seconds left. Junior Zach Neiderer still managed to find a good look for a three-pointer, but unfortunately, the shot didn’t fall. Then, 2 days later, Zach found himself in the same situation against Upper Darby. Down two, Senior Sawyer Smith found Zach for a wide open three, which Zach hit, winning the game for the Raptors 57-56. The Raptor’s offense has improved with many players stepping up – especially shooting wise. Specifically, senior guard Roman Rivera has caught fire over the past few games; his three-point shooting is extremely helpful to Radnor’s offense. As a unit, RBB shares the ball very well, which leads to open cuts and easy baskets. Additionally, Radnor’s defense has stepped up tremendously. The boys’ zone defense has made it very difficult for other teams to score on, and their full court press has caused opponents many turnovers. Every game, the Raptors’ chemistry improves, and the team keeps getting tougher. The Raptors look to bring lots of energy to end their season in future games against Strath Haven, Springfield and Penncrest. We are excited to see more of the Raptors’ remarkable flashes in the rest of the regular season in the upcoming playoff run. Go Raptors!
Basketball (Girls) – Ava Preate and Bree Simpson
The Radnor girls’ basketball team has been battling through a rollercoaster stretch, all while showing grit, growth, and flashes of dominance. On January 18, the girls went toe-to-toe with Downingtown East in what started as a tight game. But as the opposition caught fire from beyond the arc, Radnor’s defense struggled to adjust, and the game slipped away. Determined to bounce back, they faced off against Harriton on January 23 in a nail-biter that remained close from start to finish. Radnor pulled off a hard-fought 47-40 victory, proving their ability to handle pressure. By January 28, they had found their rhythm. Taking on Marple Newtown, Radnor kept it competitive early before flipping the switch in the third quarter. Once they built a solid lead, they never looked back, cruising to a dominant 20-point win. Junior Anna Reger was unstoppable, dropping 17 points to help put the game away. Radnor is hitting its stride at just the right time, with their defense tightening up and offense clicking. RGB currently holds a record of 12 wins and 6 loses, hoping to make it 13 at their home game on January 30 versus Strath Haven. Go RGB!
Cheerleading – Abby Merschel
The past few weeks, Rad Cheer has been busy! The girls attended their last local comp last Saturday at Garnet Valley High School. Now, Rad Cheer waits the final days before departing from Philadelphia and heading down to Orlando, Florida to compete in the NHSCC. They are putting on a showcase Tuesday, February 4 from 5-5:30, so SHOW UP AND SHOW OUT! On top of that, the team is cheering on the Radnor Raptors Boys Basketball team in their last home game of the regular season. Wish the girls luck in this upcoming week, and Go Radnor!
Ice Hockey (Boys) – Hayden Goldenberg
The last couple weeks have been quiet for RAHO since their big win over Strath Haven (3-0). The boys have been working hard at practice, seeking a better seeding in the Central League Playoffs. However, they finally hit the ice again in a big game against Marple Newton. It was evident that RAHO had not played recently, though, as they began a few steps behind Marple. Despite a slow start, the boys mounted two different comebacks, highlighted by yet another multi-point performance from Junior Sam Kane. In the end, it was unfortunately not enough, as RAHO dropped the hard-fought game 8-5. With another game against Marple scheduled, the boys look for revenge in their hunt for a better playoff position. Goodluck RAHO, and GO RADNOR!
Ice Hockey (Girls) – Gabriella Eun
A few weeks ago, our Radnor Girls Hockey team rematched Pennridge on January 1, which ended in a competitive score of 7-9. On January 16, they played against Kingsway and lost with the resulting points of 6-1. With January coming to a brisk end, we invite everyone to attend the girls’ final rematch games against Pennridge (on February 10) and Conestoga (on February 21). Although their current record is 6 wins and 8 losses, Radnor Girls Hockey hopes to raise it to an even 8-8 in the last two regular season games. We wish our girls the best of luck!Â
Indoor Track (Boys) – Commerce Fisk
As January comes to a windy close, the boys of Radnor Track and Field celebrate another superb month of running, jumping, and throwing. Sophomore sprinter Noah Engstrom ran a fantastic 400m race, finishing in 54.55. Junior Owen Bradwell returned to his excellence in the 800m, placing 10th overall (2:07.02). Radnor’s burgeoning 4x800m team (Jack Wible, Connor Walsh, Aiden Landau, Michael Zhao) finished 12th overall, finishing in 9:17.17. Lastly, Senior Captain Owen Lim jumped a phenomenal 20-01.50 in the long jump, earning him 5th place overall. In Triple Jump, Owen Lim placed second overall with a stunning 13.36m leap, while at Long Jump, Senior Langston Hughes surpassed 18-02.00. Senior Brandon Ngyuen then hurled over 11-06.00, earning a second place finish and a PR for the captain. Back on the track, the 4x400m team (Joseph Garzio, Wayne Fontaine Jr, Zeph Yisrael, Noah Engstrom) produced a tremendous result as they finished 6th overall, finishing in 3:28.70, earning a bid for States, the Meet of Champs and the title as PA #13. Senior captain and University of Maryland commit Joseph Garzio also ran a delicious 4:19.96 mile, placing first and qualifying for States and the Meet of Champs. On January 24, the TFCAGP held a novice meet that many young members of the team attended. Sophomore Milo Kelman ran 58.13 in the 400m. Freshman Luke Waltman impressed in the 1 mile, finishing in 5:34.39. The novice 4x400m team (Nicholas Fontaine, Milo Kelman, Brandon Gray, Alexander McKenzie) demonstrated Radnor’s youthful drive, finishing third overall with a time of 4:08.33. On January 26, the boys were back at the Ott Center for the Hickey Relays. Radnor delivered a prolific 4x200m performance, as Noah Engstrom, Wayne Fontaine Jr, Erik Mortensen, and Zeph Yisrael ran a 1:32.67, earning 2nd place in the meet. Later that day, Garzio ran in the PTFCA Indoor Track Festival, competing in the 400m. In a stacked field, Garzio finished 4th overall with a time of 50.72. Also competing was sophomore phenom Connor Walsh, who ran the 3000m in 9:28.27. With February right on the doorstep, Radnor Boys Track and Field looks to further assert their dominance on the district and state stages. Go Radnor!
Indoor Track (Girls) – Grace Kimlinger
Through a chilly January, RGTF has continued to make great strides, both on and off the track! Starting 2025 off strong, our athletes competed in the Bears Invitational at Ursinus College on January 15. Radnor’s 4x800m relay, consisting of Emma Hyde (Sr.), Mia Richter (Jr.), Katelyn Anderson (So.), and Coco Conner (Fr.), raced a fantastic time of 10:05:50, earning a PA #8 time and placing #83 nationally! Anderson and Hyde later went on to place fourth and sixth in the 3000m run, running 10:55:47 and 10:57:42 respectively, and Conner chased her way to a 14th place finish in the 400m. Later, Clara Humphrey (So.), Grace Kimlinger (So.), and Emily Decker (Jr.) all placed top 10 in the mile (5th, 7th, and 8th) with great PR’s! Big congrats to all our athletes that competed, especially the many other top 15 performances from Sonia Dougherty (Sr., 800m), Nahla Cooper (Jr., 55m hurdles), Natalie Merriam (So., pole vault), Maddie McBride (Sr., pole vault), and Harper Church (So., shot put). The following week, RGTF endured both the snowy winter weather and the grueling workload of midterm exams as they continued to run and lift in a busy weight room. On January 24, our athletes left straight from exams to Ursinus College to compete in the Collegeville High School Invitational. There, Sonia Dougherty broke 6 minutes in the mile and placed 17th overall. Grace Kimlinger raced a huge 800m PR of 2:36:97, earning her 17th place, too. Meanwhile, Natalie Merriam soared again to a whopping 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, earning her a 7th place finish and a PA #45 ranking! Later that weekend, Radnor’s distance medley relay (DMR) of Conner, Richter, Anderson, and Kayla Cormier (Jr.) raced at UPenn’s Ott Center’s Tim Hickey relays, where they earned silver with a 13:05:58 finish, (PA #8). To finish off a busy week, Emma Hyde raced the 3000m at the PTFCA Indoor Track Festival that evening, placing 7th in a competitive field with an 11:00:86 finish. While our athletes are enjoying a bit of a break from meets (and exams), the girls look forward to competing more in the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for some more amazing performances!Â
Squash (Boys) –Â Harsh Kakkar and Kavin Thapar
Radnor Boys Squash has had a very successful few weeks with several matches before and during midterms. On January 15, Radnor had a smashing win against Parkway West, only losing 2 matches. Amish Goyal performed exceptionally when he won an extremely close 3:2 match that dragged on for more than 30 minutes. The next day, the boys played Malvern Prep, and last Saturday, they faced Masterman High School. Practices have been full of improvement, and the team is excited with their recent performances. A special shout out to our captains, who have performed especially well. Looking forward, the boys hope to keep their momentum in the 2025 Nationals, which will take place on February 22. LET’S GO RADNOR!
Squash (Girls) – Ella Starzyk
Despite a few recent losses against the Agnes Irwin School and Germantown Friends, Radnor Girls Squash is looking better than ever! The girls are working hard for their next match against Shipley on Tuesday, February 11, and for the biggest event of the year, 2025 High School Nationals on February 21-23. The team is eager to earn another win this season and are competitively training through intense drills and matches against each other. Radnor wishes the girls the best of luck for this next chapter of the squash season and can’t wait to see them perform against Shipley and at Nationals.
Swimming (Boys) – Mohammed Badri
Radnor Boys Swim has been working hard for the past few weeks. Since the last edition, Radnor has faced Ridley, Haverford, Conestoga, Penncrest, and Marple. More importantly, however, the team has officially closed the dual meet season out. This means that the season is coming to an end, and swimmers will find themselves attempting to qualify for centrals, districts, and hopefully states. Each of the meets listed above were close, with competitors on each side recording personal bests and hitting many goals. The team now faces a tough stretch of practices and meets that see them in a pool for multiple hours a day, seven days a week – championship season is certainly no joke. For seniors, it is also their last opportunity to participate in a sport that most have enjoyed for over a decade. In light of that, I would like to give special shoutouts to seniors Timmy Ledbetter (Captain), Howard Feng (Captain), Luca Jones (Captain), Arnav Sadashiv, Coleman Coonley, Owen Groebel, and Lucas Edwards. So, if you see a swimmer in the hallways, wish them good luck on their championship season!Â
Swimming (Girls) – Sophie Masicoli
A few weeks ago, RGSwim raced against Haverford. Our girls rose to the challenge and came out on top, with many best times! Then, we tackled a two-meet week leading up to midterms. On Tuesday (1/21), we had an exhibition meet against Conestoga. This meet took place for tradition, as we did not swim against them in the regular season. We put up a good fight and had a great meet! Two days later, we raced again, taking on Penncrest. Everyone contributed to a fantastic win! Junior Juliana Frascella and freshmen Maren Diebold and Ines Biszta all made times for Central Championships in the 500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 200 IM, respectively. Everyone celebrated our seniors for Senior Night, and we will be sad to see them go. On Saturday (1/25), our divers competed in Flips of Fury, the first 11-dive meet of the season. Freshman Lillian Nguyen and senior Olivia Cohen Freue both put up eleven impressive dives. We finished out the regular season with a meet against Marple on Wednesday (1/29). Freshman Sophie Mascioli made Centrals, as well, in the 500 free! Everyone supported each other with cheers, and it felt great to end on yet another win. Overall, it has been a great season, and our team went (technically) undefeated! Everyone at RGSwim is looking forward to the postseason, with more exciting races to come!
