Rory Mcllroy had a great win at the 2025 Masters, but the whole tournament was filled with thrills and pars by every player.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — April 2025
Rory McIlroy made history at Augusta National on Sunday, winning the 89th Masters Tournament in dramatic fashion and becoming just the sixth golfer to complete the career Grand Slam. His playoff victory over Justin Rose capped a week filled with tension, stellar play, and Augusta’s signature unpredictability.
McIlroy, who pursued the green jacket for over a decade, shot 72-66-66-68 to finish at 12-under, despite a double bogey on the first hole and a bogey on the 72nd hole. Rose, who opened with a brilliant 65, matched McIlroy’s total with a Sunday 66, highlighted by a clutch 20-foot birdie on 18 to force a playoff. But McIlroy seized the moment, hitting a wedge four feet to the 18th hole and burying the birdie to end an 11-year major drought.
“It means everything,” McIlroy said, holding back tears. “It’s been a long road.”
The course played firm and fast, with tricky winds and the revamped par-5 13th proving especially punishing. Just 15 players finished under par.
Final Leaderboard (Top 5):
- Rory McIlroy (-12) – Won in playoff
- Justin Rose (-12)
- Patrick Reed (-9)
- Scottie Scheffler (-8)
T5. Bryson DeChambeau, Sungjae Im (-7)
Bryson DeChambeau, a 54-hole co-leader, stumbled with a final-round 71, while Patrick Reed quietly surged into third. Veteran Fred Couples, age 65, made history as the oldest player ever to make the cut and thrilled fans with a 191-yard eagle on Thursday.
The tournament also reignited the PGA vs. LIV Golf narrative. LIV players like DeChambeau, Reed, and Cameron Smith proved they still belong in major contention.
Viewership soared, peaking at nearly 20 million during the playoff. And while McIlroy’s Grand Slam will dominate the headlines, the 2025 Masters delivered a week of vintage Augusta magic—a mix of brilliance, heartbreak, and golf at its absolute best.
