Time flies – a long (but short) eight months have passed, and with them, the 24-25 Radnor Sports Roundup. This year’s Editorial Boards were composed of writers dedicated to their craft, and without their work, none of the Roundup’s editions would exist.
To refresh readers’ minds (or introduce to newcomers), this fall, I created a new series within the Sports Roundup called “The Brains Behind the Operation.” These articles cover exactly what they describe: the talented members of the Sports Editorial Board. I wanted to give an opportunity to each writer to cover themselves, rather than the sports for which they are typically responsible.
I asked each member of the Spring Editorial Board to answer the following questions:
- Why did you write for the Roundup?
- What is your favorite memory from this season?
- What are your goals as an athlete and/or writer in the future, either within Radnor or beyond?
- What is your favorite aspect of spring?
For the last time this year, read below to learn about the names that sit next to each of the Roundup’s spring sports.
– Kayla
Baseball – Blake Fein (Junior)
- I wrote in the Roundup because Hayden made me, because he was too lazy to do all the baseball blurbs alone.
- My favorite memory from this season is Teddy’s walk off in the District Championship.
- My goals as a writer are to improve my skills and to write for the Roundup again next year.
- My favorite thing about spring is the flowers.
Crew (Boys) – Arnav Sadashiv (Senior)
- I enjoyed sharing our story throughout this year’s Roundups, because it was fun to write, and it was a way to show how much the team means to me.
- My favorite memory of this season is from the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, where my teammate Gavin Payne and I raced together in a double (V2x). It was our last race of the season, and it also ended up being our best race – a personal victory for us and our progress across the past months that felt so, so great.
- As I graduate from Radnor, my goal is to remember all the lessons I have been taught, have learned, and that have shaped me from the crew team (shoutout Coach Brian) and from everywhere else across these past years.
- My favorite aspect of spring rowing was the daily practices on the Schuylkill in Conshohocken. The days get longer, and the riverbank foliage gets greener, and the frequent cool and cloudy weather is my favorite rowing conditions. I also love seeing the miles-long freight trains that regularly rumble on the riverbank railroad.
Crew (Girls) – Caroline Croke (Sophomore)
- I started writing for the Radnor Sports Roundup to get more involved with my school and help represent my team.
- My favorite memory from this season was traveling with my team to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta.
- As an athlete, I hope to continue to stay dedicated to my teammates and get more involved with my team. Next season, I hope to help lead my team to greater success and one day place at City Championships.
- My favorite aspect of spring was lifting with my team and getting to train with some of the freshmen I didn’t have the chance to get to know before.
Lacrosse (Girls) – Tatum Brown (Junior)
- I write for the roundup because I love sports and sports writing.
- My favorite memory from this season was when we beat Conestoga in girls soccer. A close second would be when we beat Stoga at Stoga in girls lacrosse by one goal.
- My goal is to have a great last senior season at Radnor!
- My favorite aspect of spring is the feeling of renewal all around and the anticipation for summer.
Softball – Ava Preate (Sophomore)
- I wrote for the Roundup because I love writing, and I thought I would give coverage on softball, because it is very underrated.
- My favorite part of the season was when we got a triple play during our game!
- My goal as an athlete is to be consistent and always be a great teammate.
- My favorite aspect of spring is the flowers and warmer weather!
Tennis (Boys) – Max Spillerman (Junior)
- I wrote for the Roundup this year because I love sports and journalism.
- My favorite memory was being able to compete at States.
- My goals for the future are to continue training, to play in college, and to run it back to states next season.
- My favorite aspect of spring is the change in weather – it gets warmer, the leaves come out, and everything is brand new.
Track & Field (Boys) – Commerce Fisk (Senior)
- I wrote for the Roundup because I love sports and I love giving a spotlight to all athletes and highlighting not just the biggest victories but the smaller successes that often go unnoticed.
- My favorite memory from this season was the Delaware County Championships, because it was a beautiful Friday night, much of the team was at the meet, and everyone ran and performed really well.
- My goals as an athlete are to become a more composed player, combining my love and drive for the sports I play with a smart and calculated side that allows me to get the best of both worlds. As a writer, I hope to continue to navigate the big and small stories of sports and in the world beyond the field.
- My favorite aspects of spring include March Madness, Indy 500, the end of the Premier League season and warmer weather.
Track & Field (Girls) – Grace Kimlinger (Sophomore)
- I wrote for the Roundup because I love sharing the accomplishments of all of Radnor’s hard working athletes, and I get to develop my writing skills.
- My favorite memory was all of the meets and getting to cheer the whole team on! It was so fun being able to watch everyone work hard and support each other.
- As an athlete, I want to continue to get faster and work on strength training. As a writer, I hope to write more articles for the sports section in the future and to continue writing for the Roundup.
- My favorite part of spring is probably the weather! It’s so nice to run in, and I love getting to do things outside with my friends and family.
Ultimate Frisbee (Boys) – Ben Rickmond (Sophomore) and Kavin Thapar (Sophomore)
Ben:
- I have written for the Roundup this year to help provide insight on one of the school’s lesser-known sports. I know that Ultimate is a very engaging sport to play and watch, but more people need to know about it, which is why I have written for this column.
- A favorite memory from this season includes some very fun practices, which focused on friendly competition that also developed our skills. Another memory is our win against Arcadia University this spring, since it was nice to come up on top after a tough day of college competition.
- My goal as an athlete is to continue to support my team as much as I can while we have been having low numbers. As a writer, my goal is to continue writing and spreading the world about ultimate.
- My favorite aspect of the spring is the amazing weather, which allows a breath of fresh air after the cold winter months. The start of the spring frisbee season is also a highlight, since it is fun to be able to play outside with your friends every day.
Kavin:
- I wrote for the Roundup because it was a great way to improve my writing skills and show the hard work of our team.
- My favorite memory from this season was Cities, especially the experiences together as a team.
- As an athlete, I want to improve throughout high school and build up the team. As a writer, I would like to continue improving my writing and grow throughout my next two years at Radnor.
- My favorite part about spring is definitely the weather, particularly later. It’s not unbearably hot like the summer, and it’s not cold and dreary like the winter. It’s also great after AP exams, as the school year starts winding down.
Ultimate Frisbee (Girls) – Anrui Xu (Junior)
- I write for the Roundup because it gives me a way to take my mind off the pressure of managing the journalistic behemoth known as the Radish. And also because I’m too young to get hired by Ultiworld.
- My favorite memory from this season was Senior Night. I got to throw flicks with dinosaur arms, play in the deep-deep zone position, and frantically run around during a twenty-eight person universe point. Also up there was watching the freshmen take photos of the Blahaj plush at States.
- I’ve got my future laid out already. I’ll get recruited to the Davenport University superteam, take home a Callahan award, and throw the winning scoober assist against UNC Darkside in the finals of D-I Nationals. On the side, I’ll be taking over Ultiworld and reimagining the site according to my own vision. I intend to get rid of all the stupid power rankings and tournament recaps and award announcements so we can focus on what frisbee journalism really needs: podcasts.
- My favorite aspect of spring is the nice weather. There’s nothing better than sitting on the bus during a sunny afternoon while scrolling through updates on my phone for my favorite teams: the Phillies, Eagles, and Davenport Panthers. Spring is also an optimal time to search for four-leaf clovers.
Thank you again to this year’s Spring Editorial Board for their unwavering commitment to covering each of their sports with both elegance and enthusiasm. I am so proud of each of the members for concluding the year’s Roundups with an exceptional ending. Many of our writers will be returning to RHS, so keep an eye out for their names in next year’s articles!
It is hard to think that my year as Sports Roundup Editor has come to an end. I have had so much fun this year drafting, editing, and publishing Roundups all while learning about sports with which I am unfamiliar and about the members of the Board. I will not lie and say this job is easy – I sit here typing at 12:47 am to ensure Mr. Dunbar gets his ‘early morning’ deadline ;). Despite the occasional stressful stints, though, I would take this position again in a second. Together, the Editorial Board and I have continued a Radnorite tradition that covers the very heart of Radnor culture.
