
On Thursday, January 7, Senior Nyah Yao made history at the Radnor Girls Varsity Basketball game against Upper Darby. Nyah scored her 1,000th point, an accomplishment that makes her the fourth female and the thirteenth overall RHS student to do so.
This season, Nyah currently averages 18.6 points a game. Beginning freshman year, Nyah has gotten minutes on Varsity and earned a starting spot her sophomore year. From the start of the Upper Darby match up, the stakes were high. Her friends, family and teammates were all there to show support. Going into the game, Nyah was at 984 points, meaning she needed to score 16 points (just shy of her game average) to reach 1,000. In the fourth quarter, Radnor had a solid lead on Upper Darby. AsNyah went up for a layup , she was fouled. Already being at 14, she was just 2 away from making Radnor history. At the line, she knocked down both shots, putting her at exactly 1,000 points. The whole team stormed the court with posters and balloons to celebrate this amazing accomplishment. The final score of the game was 38-20, and Nyah finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal.
Outside of school, Nyah enjoys doing art and drawing, and she is an avid movie watcher. She is also a wonderful musician and excels at the guitar. Additionally, Nyah serves as the Radnorite’s RadnorBeat section editor. Nyah is the girl’s basketball team captain and a huge inspiration to all the players. Freshman Charlotte Whitcomb described her as “a great leader who really knows how to pump us up.” She is known for her positive mindset and her constant smile on and off the court. With the rest of the season and playoffs up ahead, the girls look forward to Nyah making a crucial impact on the team.
