Fernando Castro

On Tuesday February 20th, 2018 the Radnor girls basketball team played Pope John Paul II in the first round of the PIAA 5A District 1 Playoffs. They are the 9th seed in the District, and they played in PJP’s gym.  This year, RGB finished with a total 13-8 record, and 8-6 league record, earning them a 6th place finish in the Central League, in the middle of the pack. The team beat up on lower level central league teams and struggled against the upper echelon. The out of conference games were where the teamed thrived, however. Outside of the central league, Radnor Girls played seven games and won five of them, only dropping to Central Bucks East, and winning against Interboro, Pennsbury, Merion Mercer, Friends Central, and Chester.
Pope John Paul II finished 13-10 in their regular season, with a strong 9-4 record in their conference, featuring tough teams like Springford and Perkiomen Valley.
The Radnor girls started out with an offensive explosion, finishing the first quarter up 18-2. They poured it on the second and went in at halftime up 32-11. In the second half, Pope John Paul II found their offensive footing, scoring 34 points, but their defense did little to slow down the Raiders, who took the game with a final score of 62-45. Freshman point guard Brienne Williams went 5-7 from the field, and a perfect 5-5 from the foul line, finishing the game with 15 points. Sophomore Ellie Mueller led RGB in scoring with 20 points, going 8-11 from the field. Senior Sydney D’Entremont also scored efficiently, finishing 7-8 from the foul line and 4-5 from the field. The Radnor girls offensively exploded in the first half, distancing them from PJP and paced themselves well in the second to earn a comfortable victory.
They will play their second round playoff game on February 23rd against West Chester Henderson, the undefeated first seed in the 5A District 1 bracket, who dispatched of Upper Moreland comfortably, by a score of 52-29. RGB will have to continue getting production across the board from all classes if they want to win against WC Henderson. They will play at West Chester Henderson.
