As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, fall sports come to an end and winter sports tryouts and activities are set in motion. The Radnor Sports Roundup has welcomed a new set of writers and we are excited to provide the latest updates on our school’s sports world.

Basketball (Boys) – Arielle Mims
The Radnor Boys Basketball season is almost underway! After three days of tryouts, the teams were assembled and started practicing right away. On Saturday, RBB had three solid scrimmages at the Haverford School, so fans can look forward to seeing some strong performances this season. After securing the Central League Title and a District 1 Class A championship win, RBB is eager to continue their successful streak. This Friday, RBB officially starts their season with a tip-off tournament vs. Interboro HS.
Basketball (Girls) – Kayla Cormier
As our winter sports season has commenced, the Radnor Girls Basketball program is eager to kickstart their 2023 season. RGB held their annual tryouts over the weekend of November 17th in order to establish our freshmen, JV, and Varsity squads. The girls’ first game is right around the corner, on Tuesday, December 5th, against West Chester East. In the meantime, RGB has been training tirelessly in anticipation through practices, lifts, and scrimmages against Merion Mercy and Bishop Shanahan. Readers can look forward to an exhilarating season of RGB domination in the near future!
Cheerleading – Trinity Emery
Radnor Cheerleading competed at the Northeast Regional competition on November 18th. The cheerleaders competed against twelve other teams and tied for second place. Between the execution and skills, the cheerleaders received zero deductions and received a bid, so they are happy to announce that they will be competing in the National competition in Orlando, Florida this February. Until then, the girls are preparing for their next competition on December 16th at Haverford High School, where they will compete against local teams. Additionally, the cheer team is getting ready to cheer on our basketball team.
Crew (Boys) – Dan Kaper
The boys crew team ended their fall season at the Frostbite and Braxton Memorial Regatta. Though Mercer lake is known for its unrelenting weather at this time of the year, the boys did what they do best and brought home some metal. The JV4 (Timmy Ledbetter, Ian Sutherland, Matt Tyburski, and Isaac Denham) won gold, beating some of the fastest crews on the east coast. Less than an hour later, Radnor’s V4, stroked by Kyle Spadaro, won third in their heat. At the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, our JV4 took home a second gold medal, and I’m sure their necks are starting to get sore from all the precious metal they’ve been carrying. RBCC has finally wrapped up the racing season and is headed for a hard winter in the training warehouse.
Crew (Girls) – Arielle Mims and Caitlin Roeltgen
The Radnor Girls Crew team headed back to Mercer Lake for the last regatta of the fall season, the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, on November 12th. In the coldest weather yet, the RGCC raced 2000 meter sprints. 2 varsity eights, a JV eight, and a novice eight all raced to close out the season. We had one varsity eight place 2nd in their heat, qualifying for finals later in the day where they placed 6th. RGCC had a solid finish to the season, and is training hard during the winter to come back ready for the spring season!
Field Hockey – Cailin Kelly
Radnor Girls Field Hockey had an amazing season. They made it all the way to Round 2 of States in Hershey and unfortunately lost with a close game of 3-2, which even went into overtime. We are so proud of all the work this team put in and are so excited to see what they do next year!
Ice Hockey (Girls) – Samantha Takefman
The Radnor Girls Ice Hockey team has been holding practices since early October, working hard and improving their skating and stick skills. So far in the 23-24 winter season, the team is off to a strong start with a 2-2 record and some tight games against tough competitors. The season started with a pivotal game against Lower Merion. With fantastic defense on both sides, the score was 0-0 for the entirety of the first quarter. The teams were evenly matched until sophomore Samantha Mitchel broke away and scored the only goal on both sides, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the girls. This past Monday, the girls played West Chester East. Eighth-grade superstar Francesca Christy scored an effortless hat trick; the girls dominated the game with a final score of 9-1. At 8:45 on November 29th, Radnor Girls Ice hockey is set to play Pennridge at Hatfield Ice. We wish the girls the best of luck and congratulate them on their recent victories!
Indoor Track (Girls and Boys) – Niva Menon
Excited for another season, the Radnor Indoor Track and Field team is looking to conquer all. Recently starting practice, the blistering cold does not stop this track team. With our senior runners well-equipped to lead the team, the team is looking at a great season ahead. From Lehigh University to Penn State, make sure to be on the lookout for this speedy team. Good luck to all for the season ahead!
Soccer (Boys) – Margarita Moreland
After their game was rescheduled due to an incident involving a bomb threat, the Radnor Boys Soccer team faced Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, November 9th. This was the First Round of the PIAA State Championships and the team achieved a sweeping victory (5-1). Senior Nate Lucchesi scored two goals, and the other goals were secured by Andrew Marino, Matt Santerian, and Dean Moon. That following Saturday, the boys moved on to the State Quarterfinals against Selinsgrove Area High School and won 2-0; both goals were scored by none other than Nate Lucchesi. As the team was feeling the excitement of a successful winning streak, they were looking forward to meeting Springfield in the State Semifinals at Norristown High School. Radnor fans packed the stands on the chilly November night and certainly attended a well-played game. The Raptors overcame a two-goal deficit to tie the score in the second half. At the end of regulation, Radnor received a red card and the team was down a man during overtime. After not being able to put one in the goal during first and second overtime, the game moved into penalties—during the fourth round, it came down to Radnor needing to net one to stay alive. Springfield’s goalie saved it and they took the win. In the end, Radnor Boys Soccer accomplished an impressive 18-3-2 record. Thank you seniors!
Squash (Boys) – Rhea Howard
RHSSQ is exploring a new format this year with the girls and boys teams practicing separately and the coed team being dismantled. While this change was tough at first, the Radnor Boys Squash season is off to a great start, with challenge matches already underway. Captains remain William Meyer and Eli Frankel, who return for their senior season on the team. This year, the boys welcome four freshmen: Blake Krizek, Kavin Thapar, Alex Sareen, and Jack Dugan. For their first match of the season, the team will be facing off against Lower Merion next Thursday at LM. Following what is sure to be a swift victory, the Radnor Boys’ team will be hosting a tri-match on Saturday against Delbarton’s Varsity team and Episcopal Academy’s JV team. Also, returning number one, William Krizek, returning number two, Arjun Jaswal, and returning number three, Luke Howard, are set to play in the US Open this December! We wish the members of the Radnor Boys Squash Team good luck on the start of their busy season!
Squash (Girls) – Julia Sareen
Girls squash has hit the ground running with preseason practices and ladder matches as they prepare for their first match against Conestoga on Tuesday. Led by captains Bella Flick and Rhea Howard, they are excited for the season to begin and can’t wait to compete on court!
Swimming (Boys) – Audrey Rubenstein
Boys swimming has jumped into the winter season with a splash. Their practices began back in mid-November, and the team has been hard at work since. The freshman have been showing off their skills, and are speculated to have a promising season. As we progress into December, boys swimming will be preparing for its first meet against Marple Newtown on December 14th. They hope to have a ruckus to cheer them on to a win!
Swimming (Girls) – Cailin Kelly
Radnor Girls Swimming is starting strong with our captains Emma Burke, Sophia Mlodzienski, Allison Trosset, and Kaitlin Browne. The team is working hard through 7am practices and meeting all of the new assistant coaches. The season officially started on November 17th and they have been working hard ever since. The first meet will be December 14th against Marple Newtown in our very own pool. Mark your calendars! Until then, the girls are happy to be starting the season in the newly renovated area and seeing so many familiar RGSWIM faces. Stay tuned for more exciting news and make sure to come out and support!
